VIRGINS
Directed
by Alberto Rodríguez
Summer in a working-class neighborhood in the south of Spain:
Tano, a teenager currently serving a sentence in a juvenile
reform center, receives
a 48-hour leave to attend his brother’s wedding. Together with his
best friend, Richi, Tano plans to enjoy his 48-hour pass to the limit,
doing all the things he normally can’t: drinking, taking drugs,
stealing, having sex and hanging out with his buddies.
By the end of his 48-hour pass, however, Tano witnesses the collapse
of all things he has taken for granted in his life: his neighborhood,
his
family, his friends and his loved-ones. More than just two days of
freedom, Tano’s leave turns out to be a journey into maturity.

"A street-kids piece that combines energy and delicacy to striking and subtle effect. The best Spanish movie of its type since Fernando Leon's 1998 "Barrio," pic rises above genre standard with scrupulous attention to detail and an engaging central tandem."
Jonathan Holland, VARIETY
"It is the cinematography – capturing the washed out beauty of a southern Spanish town – as well as the especially fine, realistic acting by the young cast that help make this such an entertaining yet undeniably powerful film."
Raymond Murray, PHILADELPHIA INT'L FILM FESTIVAL
"(Director) Rodriguez has a very large cast of young actors at his disposal here and they are all exceptional, particularly the baby faced Juan Jose Ballesta who at times has a striking resemblance to a young Mark Wahlberg. Jesus Carroza is equally strong as Tano’s utterly amoral and self serving best friend Richi."
Todd Brown, TWITCH
"An energetic and delicate look at youth. A realistic story in a movie that will possibly steal your heart!"
Amos Lassen, CINEMA PRIDE
"Rodríguez has coaxed compelling central performances from his impressive young cast; the photography, soaked in the hot yellows of southern Spain, is beautiful; the Latin soundtrack cool."
Matt Kelly, FILM EXPOSED
"Reminiscent of early Pasolini or Antonioni!"
Kevyn Knox, THE CINEMATHEQUE
“7 VIRGINS bubbles with propulsive energy!”
Peter Martin, AMERICAN FILM INSTSITUTE (AFI) FEST
“A beautiful film about a young man's quest for integrity.”
Daria Lysy, THE GLOBE AND MAIL
“The story races to a stirring conclusion without ever feeling rushed. 7 VIRGINS is definitely recommended!”
Peter Martin, TWITCH
“5 out of 5 stars! A wonderful Spanish film!”
Amos Lassen, CINEMA PRIDE
